In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak uses elements of magical realism to challenge the reader. Zusak creates an altered reality to expose to the reader the idea that Nazi Germany may have been deceived into believing that genocide was okay. An example of this is when the reader discovers after reading the book that Molching is not a real town. The reader believed the town was real because it used real places and events that took place to place Molching. This means that the town could be placed on a map by a reader. Zusak uses statements like “Quite a way beyond the outskirts of Munich, there was a town called Molching” to tell the reader where Molching is and to convince the reader that the town real. As the reader has been influenced and lead into believing that Molching is real and so starts to question what else is not real or adjusted for the story. This pushes the reader to think about Nazi Germany because the novel is based in Nazi Germany. In real life we have been lead to believe that Nazi Germany was a country of hateful people that only want to control the world; However, the book highlights the fact that many of the people in the country were the same as the rest of us. This forces the reader to think about how a whole country could be told that mass genocide was okay and should be accepted. As the reader has just been easily deceived about the existence of an entire town in the book it shows to the reader that if a lie is wrapped in some truth it is believable and even can be taken for reality. This shows how humans are very good believers and can be told almost anything and we will believe it. This also shows that even the current modern societies that believe they are very inclusive could be tricked into believing that shunning and killing a People is the only way to get out of a situation of their own making.
