The Book Thief
Structures
Setting
Section 1
Nazi Germany where the Book Thief is set refers to Germany between 1933 and 1945 when Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party were in power. The government controlled almost every aspect of life through the legal system. Hitler was the sole leader of the country being voted in on 19th August 1934. Racism was a major part of the regime, especially antisemitism as the Nazi party blamed the Jewish people for Germany’s economic and general state after world war 1. Jews however weren’t the only people to be discriminated by the Nazi party. In fact anyone who held a belief that opposed theirs was arrested or sent to the front.
Section 2
Molching is a fictional town created in the novel, The Book Thief. The town is portrayed to be just outside of Munich. In the book the town is portrayed as a real town and when the reader finds out that the town is made up it makes them question what is also a lie in the book. As the reader now questions all the information given to them about the book they are put in the position of many Germans after the war as they are told or learn of the atrocities done by their leaders.
Additional Task
Symbol
“First the colours
Then the humans
That’s usually how I see things.
Or at least, how I try”
I predict that the colours in the quote will be black as earlier in the text death is referenced and death is generally related to black. It will probably also include red as death and violence are generally related to each other. Violence is represented as Red.
